Curvature-Driven Wrinkling of Thin Elastic Shells

چکیده
How much energy does it take to stamp a thin elastic shell flat? Motivated by recent experiments on the wrinkling patterns of floating shells, we develop rigorous method via $\Gamma$-convergence for answering this question leading order in shell's thickness and other small parameters. The observed involve "ordered" regions well-defined wrinkles alongside "disordered" whose local features are less robust; as little no tension is applied, preference not priori clear. Rescaling typical pattern, derive limiting variational problem effective displacement shell. It asks, linearized way, cover up maximum area with length-shortening map plane. Convex analysis yields boundary value characterizing accompanying their defect measures. Partial uniqueness regularity theorems follow from characteristics ordered part In can deduce principle minimum stamped shells.

Wrinkling of pressurized elastic shells.
We study the formation of localized structures formed by the point loading of an internally pressurized elastic shell. While unpressurized shells (such as a ping-pong ball) buckle into polygonal structures, we show that pressurized shells are subject to a wrinkling instability. We study wrinkling in depth, presenting scaling laws for the critical indentation at which wrinkling occurs and the nu...
متن کاملWrinkling reveals a new isometry of pressurized elastic shells
We consider the point indentation of a pressurized, spherical elastic shell. Previously it was shown that such shells wrinkle once the indentation reaches a threshold value. Here, we study the behaviour of this system beyond the onset of instability. We show that rather than simply approaching the classical “mirror-buckled” shape, the wrinkled shell approaches a new, universal shape that reflec...
متن کاملCurvature effects in thin magnetic shells.
A magnetic energy functional is derived for an arbitrary curved thin shell on the assumption that the magnetostatic effects can be reduced to an effective easy-surface anisotropy; it can be used for solving both static and dynamic problems. General static solutions are obtained in the limit of a strong anisotropy of both signs (easy-surface and easy-normal cases). It is shown that the effect of...
متن کاملA simplified model for elastic thin shells
We introduce a simplified model for the minimization of the elastic energy in thin shells. This model is not obtained by an asymptotic analysis. The thickness of the shell remains a parameter as in Reisner-Mindlin’s model for plates and Koiter’s model for shells in the linear case. The simplified model admits always minimizers by contrast with the original one. We show the relevance of our appr...
متن کاملMetric-Induced Wrinkling of a Thin Elastic Sheet
We study the wrinkling of a thin elastic sheet caused by a prescribed non-Euclidean metric. This is a model problem for the patterns seen, for example, in torn plastic sheets and the leaves of plants. Following the lead of other authors we adopt a variational viewpoint, according to which the wrinkling is driven by minimization of an elastic energy subject to appropriate constraints and boundar...
